Be thankful you’re not a goat and living in Nepal at this time of year. Today is Maha Astami (Great Eighth Day) and tonight is Kala Ratri (Black Night). This is the eighth day of Dasain, and the start of the sacrifices to the goddess Durga. Dasain festival celebrates the victory of Durga over the evil buffalo demon Mahisasura. At midnight tonight, eight buffaloes and 108 goats will be beheaded by sword at Durbar square. Then tomorrow, the real slaughter begins – goats are tied up everywhere on the streets today, and tomorrow night the menu will likely be goat steaks, goat stew, and maybe spaghetti with goat sauce.
